Using n-alkanes to estimate herbage intake and diet composition of cattle fed with natural forages in Madagascar

چکیده

Accurate estimates of feed intake are important in order to develop accurate ration formulations, for selecting livestock according production efficiency, and reducing environmental impact livestock. The present study assessed the accuracy n-alkanes estimate individual herbage diet botanical composition cattle fed natural forages, typical Madagascar. effect two different forage allowances seasons on was also tested. Eight Norwegian red pie sires (232 ± 20 kg BW) were orally dosed twice daily with paper pellets containing 456.61 21.64 mg C32 alkane as external marker. Animals housed pens mixtures five forages species typically used by farmers rainy season (Aristida multicaulis, Hyparrhenia rufa, Imperata cylindrical, Urochloa brizantha Stylosanthes guyanensis) dry (Chrysopogon serrulatus, Cynodon dactylon, cylindrica, Lolium multiflorum Leersia hexandra Sw). randomly assigned allowances: (i) ad libitum a refusal 5 % (ii) 1.1 DM body weight (BW). n-alkane pairs C31:C32 C32:C33 ratio C32/Acid Insoluble Ash (AIA) plants faeces intake. estimated using profile from C27 C35 plant faeces, least squares optimization. underestimated (P < 0.0001) 25 season, both 26 animals receiving diet, regardless season. In contrast, based did not differ measured low allowance during C32/AIA actual intake, 50 %, animal consuming 0.0001). faecal recovery (AFR) corrections factors set affected 0.01) proportions each species, that comprised seasons. application appropriate AFR permitted have better estimates. It is concluded wax advantageous estimating cattle. However, improving prediction, it measure before calculation.

Using n-alkanes to estimate diet composition of herbivores: a novel mathematical approach.

N-alkanes are long-chain saturated hydrocarbons occurring in plant cuticles that can be used as chemical markers for estimating the diet composition of herbivores. An important constraint of using n-alkanes to estimate diet composition with currently employed mathematical procedures is that the number of markers must be equal or larger than the number of diet components. This is a considerable ...

Determining diet composition on complex swards using n-alkanes and long-chain fatty alcohols.

We conducted an experiment to quantify the accuracy of methods based on n-alkanes and long-chain fatty alcohols for determining the diet composition of animals grazing complex swards. We cut forage from two indigenous vegetation communities, a Molinia caerulea-dominated grassland and a Calluna vulgaris-dominated dwarf-shrub community, and offered it to mature ewes in different ratios in a zero-...

Application of long-chain alcohols as faecal markers to estimate diet composition of horses and cattle fed with herbaceous and woody species.

Utilization of long-chain alcohols (LCOH) as diet composition markers in horses and cattle was assessed in a study conducted with 12 mature crossbreed mares (385±47 kg BW) and six adult non-lactating cows (499±36 kg BW) of Asturiana de los Valles breed. The LCOH data were combined with alkane and long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) data to test the applicability of combining these markers to estimate ...

Degree of Starch Access (DSA): Starch Digestibility in Forages and Grains fed to Dairy Cattle

Starch, supplied in Midwest diets primarily from high-moisture and dry corn grain and whole-plant corn silage, is an important source of energy for dairy cattle. However, the digestibility of corn starch can be highly variable. Various factors, particle size (fine vs. coarse grind), grain processing (steam flaked vs. dry rolled), storage method (dry vs. high-moisture corn), moisture content of ...
